It would be hard to underestimate the influence of Pollock's paintings on my work. In 1966 I spent a year pouring over a large art book of his work and then drove to New York City twice from Durham, NC to see his retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1967. I even painted a number of large paintings in his style (really). How does this relate to my photography? One local art critic said that I was 'action painting with a digital camera'. And that is not a bad description. Somehow Pollock's legacy gave me the freedom to move with my camera in any way that worked -- that created an interesting photograph. I did not put any limits on my motion and was willing to experiment.
