These unusual self portraits came about as a result of playing with camera movement and the immediate feedback of the digital camera. Also I had been looking at the work of Francis Bacon including a few of his very blurry self portraits. I then thought about how the Cubist painters at the early part of the century tried to create a different space with their portraits and in a similar fashion how Marcel Duchamp and the Italian Futurists (around the same time) created layers of imagery like flowing lace or facets of a gem stone in an interconnected space. So one thing led to another...
These photos were taken under low light conditions. They are true photographs that have been (except in a few cases) simply enhanced to bring out contrast.
BTW I created these works as self portraits because who else would let me take such unflattering photographs?
See a full set of Francis Bacon self portraits that I just discovered. While I was thinking about Bacon's other paintings, I had not looked at his full range of self portraits which are remarkably similar in many ways to the work that I have done here.
