The angular exaggerations of German Expressionism have always intrigued me. I saw the silent film The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari in the late 1960's before I became a photographer and was also aware of the painters who began that art movement in Germany -- and the related painters such as Edward Munch. In addition I was aware of the strong influence of German Expressionism in American Film Noir, my favorite cinema art form. Stark portraits and self portraits were a major part of this art movement -- so almost without realizing it, I did a series of self portraits that echo the German Expressionist sensibility.
