Gorky is considered to be the forerunner of abstract expressionism in the U.S. But his compositions are like no one elses. They seem to just hang from the middle of the canvas or to bleed out from the canvas. While there seem to be figures, what is figure and what is ground? I have looked at his work since the late 1960s and a number of my compositions reflect his influence.
