In the spring of 1965, before I became a photographer and when I started painting, I was obsessed with the work of Paul Klee. His work was both simple, direct, spiritual, calligraphic, symbolic, archetypal and graphic. It was as though he had learned to speak a visual language that could be understood directly by viewers -- even though that language was new to them. For me it became a doorway into visual imagery -- perhaps because I had been a writer up to that point and the idea of a visual language appealed to me. In any case Klee's imagery is one of my main influences and remains so to this day.
