Since you are drawing with light and also controlling that movement, you are creating an abstract composition. Over time you will gain a sense of how that composition is going to look as you move the camera. You will begin to feel the lines as you are drawing them and begin to be able to predict how the lines will look. And, of course, with digital you will be able to see your finished product. You can then quickly adjust your movements if you do not like the results.
In addition if you want to see how another well known photographer indulged in experimentation look at the work of: Man Ray
This light painting photograph is an homage to the paintings of Arshile Gorky.
It is actually of a stop light and the brake lights of a car ahead of me as we came to a stop in traffic (my wife was driving). The red of the lights is also reflected in my car's shiny metal hood.
I often think of abstract paintings and compositions that I am familiar with when I am creating light painting photographs. They give me both inspiration and a structure to work with.
