Life in the Forest

letter-s.gif (1682 bytes) ome special animals with fur
lived in the trees of the forest.
They were smarter
than the other animals in the trees,
or the ones who walked on the ground,
or birds that flew in the air.

All the animals in the forest
knew that these "furry animals who lived in trees"
(who we will call "Fawlits"
because we don't know their name)
were the smartest of them all.

The others knew the Fawlits were smart
because they could make so many different sounds
and call to each other from tree to tree
and across the forest.

At first the sounds they made were very simple.
One call meant "Danger! Lookout!"

Another sound meant
"I am a young Fawlit and I'm looking for a mate."

And still another meant
"My family and I are here on this branch in this tree."

The Fawlits were very happy living in the trees.
And they were also happy because they liked
being the smartest of all the animals in the forest.
